今天是星期六， Larry 和李华要和另外一个同学 Jim 一块儿去吃午饭，然后再去看电影．今天李华会学到两个常用语： to dump someone 和 babe magnet.
LL: Li Hua, Jim sounded really bummed 1 on the phone. His girlfriend just dumped him and I don't think he's handling it very well.
LH: Jim 在电话上听起来情绪很坏？你说他女朋友把他怎么啦？ Dumped him？什么是 dump？
LL: Well, first they had a fight and then she dumped him. To dump is to break up with someone.
LH: 哦～，原来 dump someone 就是不要和某人在一起了．也就是 Jim 的女朋友把他给甩啦．是喔，男女朋友分手是挺难受的。
LL: Yeah, I can't believe she dumped him after they'd been together for two years. It's really a shock.
LH: 我听了也很惊奇耶．他们在一起已经两年了， Jim 的脾气又那么好，为什么他女朋友要把他甩啦？为什么要 dump him?
LL: I don't know. He wouldn't tell me the reason why she dumped him.
LH: 他不愿意告诉你为什么啊．对，有的人啊是不愿意跟别人谈这种细节．会不会 Jim 的女朋友爱上别人啦？
LL: That's possible, but it's not really any of our business. We should just try and cheer him up while we're with him.
LH: 对，这是他们之间的事，我们啊不必过问．我们今天就想办法让他高兴一点就好啦．疑？ Larry，你有没有被女朋友甩过？ Have you ever been dumped?
LL: I really don't want to talk about that, Li Hua. If I have been dumped, it's not something I'm proud of.
LH: 你不想告诉我啊，我能理解，被别人甩了确实不是什么值得骄傲的事儿．这么说，你被甩过啊． You’ve been dumped. 为什么啊？
LL: Li Hua! I told you (that) I don't want to talk about it.

LL: Don't worry about it. Hey, look, we're almost at Jim's place.

LH: 吔，Larry，刚才吃饭的时候，你说 Jim 是个 babe magnet，他听了好像很高兴吔．这个 Babe magnet 到底是什么意思啊？
LL: A babe magnet is a man who attracts lots of women, the way a magnet attracts metal. I was trying to make him feel better.
LH: 哦～，我懂了， babe 就是指女孩儿，而 magnet 就是磁铁，所以啰，一个 babe magnet 就是很能吸引女孩儿的人．你这么说是为了安慰 Jim，意思就是啊，他很快就会找到新女朋友了，是不是？
LL: Exactly. If he feels good about himself and thinks about future possibilities, then he won't be so depressed 2 about getting dumped.
LH: 没错。只要 Jim 对自己有信心、觉得前途有希望，他就不会太难过了．而且 Jim 真的是一个 babe magnet 啊！你看，他长的一表人才，又聪明，对人也好，我想啊很多女孩都会喜欢他的！
LL: Hey, Li Hua, if you think he's such a babe magnet, then why don't you go out with him?
LH: Larry！你在说什么嘛！我说 Jim 是个好人并不意味我就要和他谈恋爱啊。
LL: I know; I'm just teasing you. Besides, even if Jim is an irresistible 3 babe magnet, I don't think it's a good idea to go out with him right now.
LH: 我同意，他啊现在情绪不好．最好等一段时间再开始谈恋爱． Larry，有没有人告诉你，你也算得上是个 babe magnet?
