我们上次学到了好几个由buy这个词组成的习惯用语. Buy通常解释“买”，而“卖”这个词的英文是sell。今天我们要讲几个包括sell这个词的习惯用语。第一个是: hard sell。很多人知道hard这个词可以解释“硬的”，那么hard sell这个短语什么意思呢?我们来听个例子。它说的是买一辆新汽车的事儿。

我们要学的下一个习惯用语是: sell down the river。这个说法得上溯到一百五十来年前美国实行黑奴制度的时代。不少人看过《汤姆叔的小屋》这部小说或者电影，了解当年美国黑奴的悲惨处境。当时一名黑奴的最大悲剧可能就是被转卖给密西西比河下游的另一个主人。因为那意味着妻离子散的命运和在棉花地里累断筋骨的操劳。当年很多黑奴就死于这种非人的待遇。所以sell down the river就是出卖某人、令人陷入厄运的意思。这个习惯用语沿用至今，让我们听个例子来琢磨它的意思。这是一家公司被解雇的职员在指控老板。
例句-3：Our boss promised he'd never sell our company to another firm. But when he got a good offer, he sold us down the river, and the new owners brought in their own people and fired us.
