Sacrifice and selflessness, our next (girls) guests certainly know about that. Jarena Betes and her fiancée Tyehsian Johnson are perfect matching in more ways than one. They got engaged last January. But a week ago today, Tye gave Jarena something more valuable than a ring. He donated one of his kidneys 2. Jarena Bates and Tyehsian Johnson are here with Dr. Honesto Momenti, who is the man who performed the surgery. He is with the North Shore University Hospital on New York's Long island.
Good morning to all of you.
Morning.
A week ago you had this done, and you are here in our studio. how you are feeling?
I am feeling good.
No soreness or anything like that?
No.
Have her cured entire, any complication 3?
No complications 4 at all.
Let’s give people a little background here. You have been given medications for kidney 1 disorders 5 for about 10 years now. But back in May, things got much much worse. You started to have kidney failure. And it was made pretty clear that you need a new kidney right?
Yeah.
How sick were you?
I was in the final stage in the kidney failure, where they want to kerples me on dialysis or I need a transplant 6.
And the list for transplant in this area is very long, the average wait is 7 years. For people of colour, the average wait is 9 years, because a 70% of people on the list are people of colour. So you need a miracle.
Yes, I did.
And you went through all the trial of matches with other people?
No, he was my first match.
He was the first person?
Yes.
So Tye, what made you decide to get tested to see if you will be a match?
Ah. Actually the day she went to get tested, to have people tested, uhm, I didn’t go, I just with the driver to just, drive her to the hospital, so her mother and sisters can get tested. And I was willing to get tested because complications were her mum, she couldn’t get tested so I was the second person to get tested, like then and there, I was the match.
You were suitable match, when you heard that, there is no turn to back now you are to said "ok, I will give you a kidney" and also they go "yes you can". Did you have any second thought at all?
None, not so at all.
What about you, did you think it was a good idea from the beginning that to get a kidney from your fiancée?
No, I had my doubts.
Why?
Because I don’t want him to go through the pain that he would have to go through, and, you know, anything happen to him later on. You know, I don’t want him to have to go through that.
We should mention that the type of surgery performed here to you, doctor, was the most non-invasive possible, correct?
Absolutely Matt, it was called Laporlus copy. We moved of the kidney in Tye performed by the few couple C . And in Jarena, we implanted the kidney.
And from you perspective, everything went great?
Oh, everything went absolutely great.
So the prognosis now then, let’s for start with Tye. Normalized, he has one kidney left, fully 7 functioning. He'll have no side effects from this. Correct?
Right.
What about Jarena?
Her prognosis is excellent. We have kept a close eye on here like the most transplant patients. But she can have a normal life. Indeed I always tell them, go and enjoy your life. She can have children in the future, she can continue with her normal activities.
So, Jarena, you are gonna get married next year some time. Right?
Yeah.
But here you fiancée have already given you something. That is a pretty strong indication of how he feels about you.
Yeah.
(Has this) Does this change your relationship at all?
No, I think this brings us a little more closer together than, before. Ha-ha.
And Tye, from your point of view, I mean?
Well, from my point of view, I like a, I’ve already taken our vows 8, through sickness and health. And also, that's what I am here for.
And you certainly held up of the bargain. And, you know, this is really an indication of how your relationship is gonna go from here. You guys are in great shape, and physically 9 and emotionally.
Good luck to you, alright?
Thank you.
Thanks very much. Tye, good luck to you.
Doctor, thanks for coming here.
Thank you very much.I appreciat it.
