字首 uni 源自拉丁文形容词 unus,原义即为 one. uni 在拉丁文中亦为字首; 后面所接的字根第一个音若是母音,则拼成un,如unanimous a. [意见一致的],universe n.[宇宙] (拉丁文作 universitas n.f.),字根 vers 有 [转] 的意思,万物旋转成为一体,自然变成 [宇宙]; 形容词 universal指 [万物皆适用],因而便有了 [共同,普遍] 的意思.

字根 act,ag,ig 源出拉丁文动词 agere, 原即有 act,drive 的意思. act 出自agere 的过去分词 actus 与名词 actio,ig 则是 加字首组字时的变体,例如 exigency 4 n. [紧急情况],exigent a. [紧急的], prodigal 5 a. [浪费,挥霍的] 以 ig 组成. agenda n. [议程] 源自拉丁文 agendum, 有 things to be done 之意. cogent 6 a. [有说服力的],源自拉丁文动词 cogere [推进,逼迫],字首 co [一起] 与字根配 合,便有 [强迫相信] 之意.

anim 源出拉丁文两个名词 anima [呼吸]和 animus 14 [心,精神],因此有两种不同的解 释. 英文 animus n. [敌意],源借自於拉 丁文 animus,於十九世纪左右已有 [仇恨] 的意思. unanimouse a. [意见一致] 的字 首 un 看似否定,其实却是 uni [一],因 此才有 [心一致],以至於 [意见一致] 的 意思. 由 anim 组成的单字,有些不属常用 字汇范围,例如: animal n. [动物], animism n. [万物有灵论],animalcule n. [微生物] 等.
