China's Foreign Ministry has said the construction work on the Nansha islands and reefs falls with the scope of China's sovereignty, and is lawful, reasonable and justified.
The ministry's spokesperson Lu Kang said the work is not meant to target any other country and does not affect the freedom of navigation and overflight enjoyed by all countries in accordance with international law in the South China Sea.
Lu Kang said a land reclamation project, on some stationed islands and reefs of the Nansha Islands, will be completed in the coming days. He also said the primary reason for the construction work is to meet various civilian demands, whilst also emphasizing that China is committed to the path of peaceful development.
