On Sept 20, 2001, President George W. Bush declared the US war on terrorism, something you’ve grown up with. Two US military operations that happened this weekend show it’s not over. The operations were both in Africa, in countries that are three thousand miles apart. The first was in Libya’s capital Tripoli. This is Abu Anas Al-Liby. He is a member of Al Qaeda terrorist organization. Early Saturday morning, a group of ten men surprised him on his way back to his home. The men were US special operation’s forces. A terrorism expert says that in a very precise operation, the men slashed 1 Al-Liby and were gone. He was one of the FBI’s most wanted terrorist because of his legit role in two bombings in 1998. More than 200 people were killed and another 5000 wounded when the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were attacked by Al-Qaeda.
Libya’s interior government called the US capture of Al-Liby a kidnapping and wanted the explanation from Washington. An American official said the Libyan government knew about the operation.
The other weekend operation happened just a few hours’ earlier. This was in the nation of Somalia, at a compound controlled by al-Shabab. Now that’s the terrorist group they were responsible for last month deadly attack in a shopping mall in Kenya. al-Shabab is also affiliated 2 with Al-Qaeda.
On Saturday, a group of Navy Seals raided the compound in Somalia. A firefight broke out, and the Seals eventually withdrew. They couldn't confirm whether the target was killed but no one American was hurt in the raid. US Secretary of State John Kerry says the two raids should send the clear message that the US would never stop its effort to hold those accountable who conduct extra terror.
