美国习惯用语:351 His number is up

今天我们要讲的几个习惯用语里面都有number这个词。大家一定知道number是数字。我们要学的第一个习惯用语是: his number is up。这个习惯用语起源于一次大战期间军队里的行话，说"His number is up," 意思就是他阵亡了。这里的number是指军人的番号。现在我们用这个习惯用语当然不再是说某人死了，到底是什么意思，让我们通过一个例子来琢磨。它说的是一个国会议员的政治生涯。
例句-1：For 30 years our congressman 1 has done a pretty good job in Washington 2. But this time I think his number is up - he has a smart young man running against him with a lot of new ideas.
