今天我们要讲的习惯用语有一个共同的词: end。 End这个词大家都熟，它解释末端、终点。End这个词虽然又短又小，却是短小精悍、勤奋活跃。它参与组成的习惯用语至少有十多个，在日常生活中时常用到。我们今天要学的第一个是: go off 1 the deep 2 end。Go off the deep end这个习惯用语可能来自游泳池。
大家知道游泳池一端是深水，另一端是浅水。如果一个人不知天高地厚，从深水那边一头跳进池里，那他可就是跳进了没顶的深水中。如果这人又不识水性，那么他想必是相当莽撞冲动的人。让我们听个例子来体会go off the deep end这个习惯用语用来比喻什么样的行为。这是爸爸在为热中于一种跳伞运动的儿子Bob担心。作这种跳伞运动的人在空中尽量延缓张开降落伞的时间。

我们要学的第二个习惯用语可比刚才那个习惯用语go off the deep end来得合人心意得多。它是：living 7 end。Living end是优秀杰出的人或事。我们来听个例子。这是一个学生在对同学推荐他非常喜欢的一部电影。

我们再学个习惯用语。它是: at loose 10 ends。 Loose意思是松动的、没系住的。如果用绳索系个活结，只要在绳索可松动的头上，也就是at loose ends，拉一下，结子就散开了。所以at loose ends常用来比喻可灵活松动的、不固定的、不受约束的情况。比方说，at loose ends可以指某人没有工作，所以能不受约束、自由活动。但是at loose ends更常用来指觉得百无聊赖、闲得慌，而想消遣一下打发时间。
