今天要学的几个习惯用语都和数字有关。大家知道数字的英文是number。第一个习惯用语是：go by the numbers。 Go by the numbers，这个习惯用语的出典可能是这样的：有些商店在过节的时候顾客盈门，柜台前排成长龙，商店为了维持秩序、按照先来后到的次序为顾客服务，就把写有数字的票子发给排队的顾客，以便严格遵守次序，防止插队和争先恐后的混乱。
我们听个例子来领会go by the numbers这个习惯用语的意思。这是一位领导在指示手下一名工作人员如何改写一份工作报告。
例句-1：John, I think you'd better start all over again with your report. I like your ideas but not the format 2. Let's go by the numbers this time and follow our standard procedure 3.

美国有许多面包糕饼店按照传统向顾客提供优惠，就叫做：baker's dozen。 Baker是做糕点的师傅，而dozen是一打的意思，也就是，十二个，所以这个短语直译就是面包师的一打。
这个短语其实起源于英国的一种老传统。当年的糕点师用勺子把一小堆、一小堆做饼干的面糊舀在烤盘上，舀出十二堆后，再加上第十三堆，这是烤给自己享用的。所以baker's dozen实在是十三。我们听个例子。这是个顾客在告诉我们他跟一家面包圈专卖店发生的误会。

今天要学的第三个习惯用语是： six of one and half a dozen of the other。这个习惯用语听来又长又复杂，其实意义简单易懂。six当然是六，half a dozen是半打，也是六，所以six of one and half a dozen of the other可不就是一个是六，另一个也是六吗？
换句话说，相当于中国俗语“半斤八两”。我们通过例子来进一步领会它的确切含义吧。这是个数学老师在启发学生Tommy解一道数学题。
