今天再学几个由heavy这个词组成的习惯用语，第一个是：play the heavy。在play the heavy这个习惯用语里，heavy显然是当名词用了，它在这儿的意思是“恶棍，”“流氓，” 而play的意思是扮演，可想而知play the heavy就表示“扮演恶棍流氓的角色。”
Pay the heavy这个习惯用语已经用了两百来年了，起先是指舞台上的表演，到了二十世纪，play the heavy也开始指电影、广播和电视里的表演了。
我们来听个应用play the heavy这个习惯用语的典型例子。在好莱坞，有些男明星专门扮演反角而成名并且挣大钱，观众一看到他们就知道是坏蛋，憎恶感油然而生。
我们要听的例子就是说一个专门扮演银幕恶棍的演员的。他的名字叫Jack 1 Palance。

今天要学的第二个习惯用语是：heavy metal. Metal是金属，heavy metal要是直译就是重金属，在这里是指重金属摇滚乐。
这个说法可能是一份音乐杂志在六十年代最先开始用的。 Heavy metal，也就是重金属摇滚乐，是一种音量很大，节奏强烈的音乐。它在六十和七十年代风靡全美，演奏时用一排排的扩音器把乐声放大到震耳欲聋的地步，演唱者也是声嘶力竭地喊叫。
当时赫赫有名的一个重金属摇滚乐队是Led Zeppelins, 当然还有别的重金属摇滚乐队也吸引了大批乐迷 。尽管在重金属摇滚乐出现后又兴起了不少其它类型的流行音乐，但是直到现在仍然有不少人特别爱听重金属摇滚乐。下面我们要听到的就是这样一位乐迷：
例句-2：That's right! Okay, I know heavy metal is too loud for some older people and it bothers them to hear the words shouted into a microphone. But when I was in college, I thought it was great, and I still like to hear it any time I can.

这里的习惯用语heavy metal指重金属摇滚乐。但是大约在1988年左右，heavy metal开始被用作军事术语，指重型武器，象坦克、重炮或者空军鬼怪式武装直升机等。

今天要学的第三个习惯用语是： heavy date。 Date通常解释为日期，但是它也可以解释为男女间的重要约会，而且很可能是会论及婚嫁的男女约会。
我们听个例子来体会吧。下面说话的是个大学生，他正在跟同学Bob说自己碰到的难题。他有一张今晚兰球锦标赛的入场券，好多人都求之不得。但是他早就和自己仰慕的那个女同学Betty约好今晚见面。好，我们听听他要怎么办。请特别注意他话里的习惯用语：heavy date:
例句-3：Bob, I've got a great seat for the big game tonight. But I'll be happy to give it to you. I have a heavy date with Betty Lou tonight and I certainly don't want to break it - I guess I'm really getting serious about her! Here you are - enjoy the game!
他对Bob说：我有今晚那场重大比赛的票，座位很好。但是我乐意给你，因为我跟Betty Lou约好了今晚见面。我当然不愿意失约。我觉得我真是越来越喜欢Betty了 。你把票拿去吧，希望你尽情享受。
