我们今天要学的几个习惯用语里都包括一个全世界人人都关心的词：weather。Weather是天气，天气好坏固然关系到每个人，但是对出海的水手说来更是至关重要，尤其是在帆船航运的时代。
在当年的海上生活中因此出现了不少由weather这个词构成的习惯用语。今天要学的第一个习惯用语是：keep a weather eye out。Keep an eye out也是个习惯用语，是“注意观察”的意思，keep a weather eye out原来指的是在海上张帆远航时头等重要的大事，也就是时时注意观测风云变幻。后来人们逐渐在日常生活中广泛地应用这个习惯用语了。表示什么意思呢？
我们听个例子来领会吧。说话的人开了家小咖啡馆，但是有人在街对面又开了家类似的咖啡馆，显然在跟他抢生意，这让他很担心，于是这个老板就叮嘱他手下的员工要密切注视对面那家店铺的动静。我们听听他是怎么说的。请特别注意他话里的习惯用语keep a weather eye out:
例句-1：Let's keep a weather eye out for those guys across the street. If they cut their prices or offer more dishes than we do, we need to be ready to fight back as quick as we can before they grab 1 any more of our customers.
他说：我们可得密切注视街对面的那些家伙，要是他们减价或者增加我们没有的新品种，我们必须在他们抢走更多顾客前尽快作出反击。
大家一定知道在用帆船航海的年代观测气象是有关生死存亡的大事，而生活在当今的现实中也不时会遇上不测风云和旦夕祸福，也得注意提防，所以习惯用语keep a weather eye out就是时时谨防生活中的烦扰变故。

今天要学的第二个习惯用语是： heavy weather。Heavy weather也产生在两百来年前用帆船航海的时代，是水手之间的常用语。Heavy weather是指狂风暴雨、雷电交加、波浪滔天的险恶天气。近年来人们开始借用水手语言中的heavy weather来指种种难以应付的障碍和困难了。
我们听个例子吧，说话的先生在谈他那位立志当电机工程师的兄弟John。
例句-2：John has his heart set on being 2 an engineer. He studies hard in his math courses, but I'm sorry to say he doesn't get very high grades. So I'm really afraid he'll run into heavy weather when he has to take calculus 3 next semester 4.
他说： John立志当工程师，他尽管在数学课程方面很用功，但是遗憾的是学习成绩平平。所以我真担心，他下学期学微积分的时候会困难重重。
这里heavy weather就指难以应付的困难和障碍。

今天要学的第三个习惯用语是： under the weather。 Under the weather沿用至今有一百五十来年了。有人推测这个习惯用语原来可能指有的人由于海上风急浪高而晕船，感到身体不舒服。现在，under the weather就是指由于天气不好而引起的身体不适。
我们来听个例子。说话的小伙子原来约好了女朋友当天晚上去看电影，但是女朋友来电话给他当头浇了瓢凉水。我们听听是怎么回事，特别注意里面的习惯用语under the weather:
例句-3：That's right. She just phoned to tell me she's under the weather today. She's come down with a headache and a bad cough so she can't go out with me tonight.
他说： 对啊，她刚打来电话告诉我她今天身体不舒服。她头很疼，又咳嗽得厉害，所以今晚不能和我一起出去了。
这里的习惯用语under the weather意思是“身体不舒服”。但是under the weather也常被人们用来委婉地指酗酒后第二天感到头痛，呕吐等不舒服的现像。
例如在这句话里： He's under the weather because of last night's party. 他昨晚聚会酒喝多了现在还头疼。

其实由weather组成的习惯用语还有不少，例如以前学过这个习惯用语： a fair-weather friend。A fair-weather friend是顺境中的朋友，言下之意是不能共患难的酒肉朋友。
还有个常用的习惯用语是：weather the storm。这里的weather是动词，weather the storm相当于中文的“历经风雨”，意思是经历并度过困难和危机。
- It is rude to grab a seat.抢占座位是不礼貌的。
- The thief made a grab at my bag but I pushed him away.贼想抢我的手提包，但被我推开了。
- Can you explain to me the purpose of being?你能对我解释一下存在的目的吗？
- What is the purpose of our being?我们生存的目的是什么？
- This is a problem where calculus won't help at all.对于这一题，微积分一点也用不上。
- After studying differential calculus you will be able to solve these mathematical problems.学了微积分之后，你们就能够解这些数学题了。
