The script of this programme

A pig

Pigs normally live in the countryside but city farms have them too

Finn:
So Jean, I see you’re wearing your welly boots today?

Jean: Yes Finn, I need my welly boots today 今天我确实是特意穿了雨靴,因为我们现在所在的地方是相当的泥泞it’s muddy.

Finn: Yes, it is muddy, isn’t it? Today on On The Town, you might not believe it, but we’re in the centre of London.

Jean: Yes, I can see modern office buildings and flats, there are buses driving past…

Finn: But as you can hear we’re also in a farm!

Finn: A city farm. What’s that? It’s a farm in a city. There are about 60 city farms in the UK, 20 in London, and this one is in Hackney, which is in East London. The farm manager is called Chris, and he’s going to tell us which animals they keep.

We’ve got chickens running around, some sheep out in the field, we’ve got a donkey which brays 2 at us, we’ve got some calves 3 and pigs, some turkeys, some geese, so many different animals. In one of the smaller sheds we’ve got rabbits and guinea pigs.

A donkey that brays – bray

Finn: Yes and pigs, rabbits and guinea pigs.

Jean: Guinea pigs 豚鼠But why have a farm here in the centre of London?

Finn: Let’s ask Chris again.

The farm’s been here 20 years and some local people had an idea to have farm in London so children could see farm animals… and then outside where we are now is actually in the garden and we grow vegetables. We have lots of volunteers growing vegetables and getting involved in growing things and learning about where food comes from…… and then we have a nice quiet area where people can come and sit with their children, so they can sit down and just enjoy being outside in a safe environment.

So basically, the local community decide what happens here, so we provide educational opportunities and training opportunities and the resources that you see here now, so we’re led by the community as to what we do.

Finn: Yes, the local community decided 4 it would be good to have a farm to give their children a chance to see farm animals, which is not easy in a city!

Jean: And they also have educational and training opportunities

Finn: So Chris said that the farm is led by the community.

Led by. The farm is led by the community.

Finn: Yes, so volunteers help to grow vegetables, and they also learn about where food comes from.

Jean: There’s that donkey again!

Finn: Yes – I think he wants to talk to us!

We have a donkey called Larry, who’s very popular with the local people. We’ve been out on various parades with him and he’s often out and about and the local pubs support him and they like to see him quite often. He’s actually quite busy – at Christmas time he does a nativity at Westminster Cathedral. 2000 children turn up and he marches down the central aisle 5 there so he’s very popular.

Jean: So Larry is quite a star!

Finn: Yes, he’s a busy donkey. Chris said that children love watching him in the nativity play at Westminster Cathedral as he marches down the aisle.

Jean: He marches down the aisle

Finn: Yes – well that’s what a bride also does at a wedding! Here’s a local girl who is also a big fan of Larry the donkey.

I live round the corner actually, so I bring everyone I know here. I’ve been loads of times, and I always come to see Larry the donkey, he’s very cute! And he only came to us as well. He was right round the other side of the farm and we were like: donkey, donkey, donkey, and he came round.

Jean: She thinks he’s really cute.

Finn: And she can see him really often because she lives just round the corner.

Jean: Just round the corner

Finn: Yes, so she said she can come often ‘cos’ she lives just round the corner. But unfortunately we’re going to have to leave the farm now, so I hope you enjoyed your visit!
