Dear Uncle, Something terrible has happened.
亲爱的叔叔,有一些烦心的事。
A mad man has moved into our house.
一个疯子搬进了我们的房子。
Do you remember when father died, mother decided 1 to rent out his offices upstairs?
你还记得当爸爸去世的时候,妈妈决定将爸爸楼上的办公室出租出去的事么?
Well, she has done it,
哎,她已经这么做了。
and Ludwig van Beethoven has moved in.
路德维希·范·贝多芬搬了进来。
Every morning at dawn Mr. Beethoven begins to make his dreadful noise upstairs.
每天黎明时分,贝多芬先生就要在楼上制造那些可怕的噪音了。
Loud poundings and growlings come through the floor.
震耳欲聋的重击声、怒吼声穿透了地板。
They are like the sounds of an injured beast.
就像是一头受伤的野兽在奋力地咆哮着。
Mother says I mustn't blame him.
妈妈说我不能够责怪贝多芬先生。
He's deaf and can't hear the noise he makes.
他聋了,听不见自己制造的噪音。
But he wakes up the twins and they start their crying.

They cry all day.
闹了一整天。
All morning Mr. Beethoven carries on this way.
每天早上贝多芬先生都是这个样子。
After lunch he storms into the street.
晚饭过后,他如狂风一般地冲上街头。
Uncle, you should see him setting out for the afternoon.
叔叔,你应该看看他下午都做些什么。
He hums to himself, he growls 2 out tunes 3, he waves his arms.
他时而哼哼呀呀自言自语,时而大声咆哮高歌,奋力地挥舞着臂膀。
His pockets bulge 4 with papers and pencils.

The children run and call him names.

Hours later he comes home.

Sometimes he's soaked with rain.

He tracks mud through the hall.

Other times he doesn't come home at all.

Or long after the house is quiet for the night he comes in,

pounding his way up the stairs above our heads.

Uncle, you know I have not seen you for some years, but I hope you will remember me.

I beg you to tell my mother to send Mr. Beethoven away.
