原文：So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spoke 1 a word unto him; for they saw that his grief was very great. Thus, one who fails to comfort others while make them sadder, called Job’s comforter. (Bible, Old Testament 2, Job1-2)

典故
据《圣经·旧约·约伯记》第1章至第2章记载，义人约伯，是个有名望的富人，常向上帝耶和华献祭，行洁净礼仪。他敬畏上帝，对上帝充满信心。但是，魔鬼撒旦对耶和华说，约伯之所以敬畏你是因为你保护他全家和他所有的一切，否则的话，他肯定不再敬畏上帝。因此，为考验约伯的诚心，上帝让约伯失去了所有的财产和家人，令他一贫如洗，约伯不改忠心。于是上帝又让他浑身长满毒疮，流血化脓，约伯痛苦不堪。约伯的三个朋友听说了他的遭遇，便来安慰他。他们从传统的宗教观念出发，认为约伯受此磨难一定是因为获罪于上帝，于是劝他向上帝忏悔。朋友们对约伯的无端指责使约伯更加痛苦。
