我们先来听下面的2个句子。
 
例句-1：He could sense that his former colleagues were laughing up their sleeves over his dismissal.
 
例句-2：We were all laughing up our sleeves at our brother when he sat down at the dinner table. He had seen his girl off at the airport and had lipstick 1 on his face and he didn't know it.
 
接招：在我们刚才听到的2个例句中都用到了同一个词语：laugh up one's sleeves。这个短语中有一个习惯用语：up one's sleeves，它的意思是：hidden but ready to be used，意为偷偷地藏着准备到时使用。例如：I still have a few tricks up my sleeves. 我还留着几招了。它与have或者是keep连用，即：have/keep something up one's sleeves，意思是keep (a plan etc) secret for possible use at a later time（把一项计划等保密不让别人知道在将来有用的时候用上），亦即我们中文中的“留有一手”之意。例如： I'm keeping this idea up my sleeve for the time being. 眼下我暂时不让别人知道我的主意。那么和laugh搭配，意思就是偷偷地笑，躲着笑，窃笑，暗笑。要表示暗笑，窃笑某人，在短语的后面加上介词at，即：laugh up one's sleeves at somebody。要表述暗笑，窃笑某事，在短语的后面用上介词over，即：laugh up one's sleeves over something。
 
知道了laugh up one's sleeves的意思，我们回到刚才听到的2个例句中来看看它们的意思再来好好体会这个短语的意思。
 
例句-1：He could sense that his former colleagues were laughing up their sleeves over his dismissal.
 
这句话是说：他可以感觉到过去的同事都在窃笑他被撤职。
 
注解1：sense：become aware of (sth)：意识到 feel：感觉
 
Eg.Although she didn't say anything, I sensed that she didn't like the idea.
 
她虽然什么也没说, 但我已意识到她不喜欢这个主意。
 
I have sensed his hostility 2 to me.
 
我已感觉到他对我的敌意。
 
注解2：dismissal：免职，解雇
 
Eg .I've only just heard about his dismissal.
 
我刚听到他遭解雇的事。
 
Eg .There were a lot of eyebrows 3 raised at the news of minister's dismissal.
 
部长被解职的消息令很多人感到惊讶。

这句话是说：当我们的哥哥坐下来吃晚饭的时候，我们都在偷偷地笑他。因为他刚才去机场送她的女朋友，脸上留下了口红，他还不知道。
 
注解1：sit down at the dinner table：坐下吃晚饭
 
注解2：see sb off：给某人送行 see off：送行，送别
 
Eg .Ann always to stand at the window and waves to see off.
 
Ann总要站在窗口前并挥手送别。
 
Eg .Bill will see off to the airport.
 
Bill要到飞机场送行。
 
Eg .A small crowd is lined up to see the guests off.
 
一小群人排队给客人送行。
 
注解2：sb has lipstick on one's face：某人的脸上留有口红印
 
下面我们再通过几个例句来熟悉这个短语的意思和运用这个短语。
 
例句-1：At that point he turned hot all over, his face flushed 4 slightly, and he began to stutter, sense that the students were all laughing up their sleeves.
 
这时候，他身上发热，脸上发红，讲话开始口吃，觉得学生都在暗笑他。
 
例句-2：Although he pretended to sympathize, he was laughing in his sleeves.
 
他心里在暗笑，但是表面上却假装同情。
