Hi, welcome to today’s morning class. I’m Juliet. As a saying runs, “An hour in the morning is worth two in the evening.” So, I am hoping that you can spend a meaningful time here.

There is a very short sentence including two words means a listener can understand that the speaker may or may not agree with a opinion. It’s similar to saying “I understand your opinion.” Let’s get the sentence from the following situational dialogue.

(Scene:It happens between two co-workers who has worked on computer softwares.)

Mary:We need to update the software we are using.

John:Duly noted 1. I will check up on it.

Obviously 2, the answer is “Duly noted.” Duly is an adverb which means “in the correct or expected manner”. In general, “to be noted” means “to be well known because of a special skill or feature”. Let’s look at two examples: He’s noted for his sense of humor 3. I am a noted ballet dancer. However, it means “understand” here.

In addition, here is an useful phrase:tocheck up on(something). It means “to examine and make sure of something.” For another example:

1.We' d better check up on how things are going with us.

2.We need to check up on this information at once.

Another situational dialogue, let’s take a look at:

Richard:May I say how lovely you look today?

Rose:Duly noted.

Here are some questions prepared for you. You are required to answer the following questions, finishing listening to the above two dialogues again.

Questions:

1. What does Mary and John need to do?

2. Does John agree with Mary? And what does he say?

3. Does Rose look lovely today?

4. How does Rose say that she understands what Richard said.

Now listen:

Dialogue 1:

Mary:We need to update the software we are using.

John:Duly noted. I will check up on it.

Dialogue 2:

Richard:May I say how lovely you look today?

Rose:Duly noted.

Answers:

1. They need to update the software they are using.

2. Yes, he does. John says he is duly noted and will check up on it.

3. Yes, she does.

4. Rose says it by “Duly noted.”

Today we have learned 4 one short sentence used in spoken English. It is——Duly noted. By the way, we’ve learned a set phrase: check up on (something).

So much for today. Thank you for your participation 5 in today’s study activity. See you next time.
