[00:00.00](2) Questions 14--16 are based on the following monologue 1

[00:16.54]You now have 20 seconds to read questions 14--17.

[00:23.48]14.What does the expression "Where is the beef?"mean?

[00:27.59]16.Who started the McDonald's?

[00:29.62]17.Why did other people want to open hamburger restaurant?

[00:32.37]Every people uses its own special words

[00:39.39]to describe things and express ideas.

[00:44.12]Some of these expressions are commonly used for many years.

[00:49.89]Others are popular for just a short time.

[00:55.43]One such American expression is "Where's the beef?"

[01:02.69]It is used when something is not as good as it is said to be.

[01:08.83]In the early 1980s, "Where's the beef?"

[01:13.98]was one of the most popular expressions in the United States,

[01:20.01]It seemed as if everyone was using it all the time.

[01:25.86]Beef,of course, is the meat from a cow,

[01:31.01]and probably no food is more popular in America than the hamburger made from beef.

[01:38.56]In the 1960s a businessman named Ray Kroc

[02:06.62]By the end of the 1960s the McDonald's Company was selling hamburgers

[02:13.67]in hundreds of restaurants from California to Maine.

[02:19.21]Not surprisingly.Ray Kroc became one of the richest businessmen in America.

[02:26.76]Other business people watched his success.

[02:31.59]Some of them opened their own hamburger restaurants.

[02:36.94]One company,called "Wendy's",began to compete with McDonald's.

[02:43.50]Wendy's said its hamburgers were bigger Donalds's or anyone else's.

[02:50.66]The Wendy's Company created the expression "Where's the beef?"

[02:56.69]to make people believe that Wendy's hamburgers were the biggest.

[03:02.44]It produced a television advertisement to sell this idea.

[03:08.29]The Wendy's television advertisement showed three old women eating hamburgers.

[03:16.44]The bread that covered the meat was very big,

[03:21.38]but inside there was only a tiny bit of meat.

[03:27.12]One of the women said she would not eat a hamburger

[03:31.96]with such a little piece of beef.

[03:36.32]"Where's the beef?" she shouted in a funny voice.

[03:41.57]These advertisements for Wendy's hamburger restaurants

[03:47.32]were a success from the first day they appeared on television.

[03:53.06]As we said,it seemed everyone began using the expression "Where's the beef?"

[06:19.53]Death was due to multiple head injuries.

[07:10.00]W:And how far away from the Neasden underpass was the drinking club?

[07:28.89]other than the drunk man and the two women who were seen with him

[07:34.71]or near him at some time?

[07:38.76]M:Yes.The club closed at half  past one

[07:44.61]and there may have been other people who left the club who went that way.

[07:50.57]We understand that there were also miniclub drivers parked in the area

[07:57.31]who may have seen something as well.

[08:01.25]W:As it is,I take it you haven't been able to identify them.
