More trouble at Japan's tsunami 1-damaged nuclear plant. Workers were evacuated 2 after smoke was spotted 3 coming from the No.3 reactor 4 unit. Plant officials have been battling to cool reactors 5 and spent fuel pools to bring the radiation-leaking plant under control.
The US State Department says it has issued potassium iodide to its staff as a precaution against radiation. But officials say they have instructed embassy employees not to take the pills until instructed.
Meanwhile there are concerns about the food supply after some food and tap water near the plant tested for higher levels of radiation. "However these also are not levels that would immediately harm human health."
Shipping 6 of some products including spinach 7 and milk from some regions has been temporarily halted. The food concerns have merchants worried about their livelihood 8. The temporary halt will only add to the economic toll 9 of the earthquake and tsunami, now estimated at around 235 billion dollars.
