There are many different types of people on WeChat.

You have the selfie maniacs 1 who have an unstoppable urge to post their selfies 24/7 and expect everyone to comment on each and every one of them. You have the "easy like" people who will press "like" on everything they see, and believe me, that does not mean they like you. You have the "hand chopping" people who cannot stop shopping, yet still shout every day, "If I buy one more thing I will chop my hands off."
I believe I have just met the ultimate and the most notorious type of person on WeChat, the one-and-only "WeChat beggar."
Before I begin, I would like to give some history on this particular phenomenon.
WeChat, the most widely used instant messaging and social media app in China, has developed a useful function that allows friends to give each other money. At first it was just sending "hongbao" (red envelopes) to each other during Chinese New Year, then it was the direct money transfer function, and eventually came the ability to scan a QR code to give and receive money. Imagine you are in restaurant where they won’t allow you to split the bill with your friends, this is where the functions come in handy.
However, this is where WeChat beggars have come in.
On Valentine’s Day this year, a "friend" of mine (more like an acquaintance) sent me a message asking for "comfort" since he found himself alone on Valentine’s Day, followed by a QR code for me to scan in order to give him money.
A few minutes later, he posted the QR code on his WeChat moments, asking for money from everyone he knows. Imagine my surprise when I saw this message. Since when is it okay to just go around asking people for money? They ask for money on their birthdays, on Valentine’s Day, on Christmas, on Chinese New Year and every holiday imaginable.
If this is acceptable behavior, what is the point in getting a job?
You cannot even say no to them because they immediately reply, "You can just give me one buck 2, why are you being so cheap? Does our friendship mean nothing to you?"
For those people, begging for money has been transformed into something acceptable and less embarrassing behind the veil of technology. However, this does not change the fact that, for most people, this type of behavior is just annoying.
Please stop begging for money on WeChat.
You should not put a price tag on friendship, and WeChat should not be turned into the latest weapon of seeking money from everyone you know.
