[00:43.53]I worked as an orderly on the overnight shift
[00:47.21]in a South Carolina hospital to put myself through school.
[00:52.41]The building we were in at the time
[00:55.18]was one of those WPA jobs from the Roosevelt era,
[01:00.28]and even though it was small and somewhat outmoded,
[01:04.88]it had been the only place for emergency services
[01:08.80]in our county for more than 40 years.
[01:12.78]But at the time this incident I'm writing about happened,
[01:16.81]a new, state-of-the-art hospital
[01:20.05]had just been finished a few miles down the highway,
[01:24.36]and while we weren't completely out of the picture,
[01:27.57]a lot of our services, including the emergency room,
[01:31.95]had been shifted to that site.
[01:35.25]Like I say, I was working my way through school at the time,
[01:40.25]and my shift generally ran weeknights
[01:44.40]from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
[01:47.14]There wasn't a whole lot to do after midnight,
