[00:01.72]Sophie Amonson was on her way home from school.

[00:05.25]It was early May. In some of the gardens the fruit trees were encircled with dense 1 clusters of daffodils.

[00:11.60]The birches were already in pale green leaf. It was extraordinary how everything burst forth 2 at this time of year.

[00:18.73]What made this great mass of green vegetation come welling up from the dead earth as soon as it got warm and the last traces of snow disappeared?

[00:27.38]As Sophie opened her garden gate, she looked into the mailbox.

[00:29.24]苏菲一打开花园的门，第一件事便是去查看信箱，

[00:31.11]There was only one letter in the mailbox and it was for Sophie.

[00:33.50]信箱里面只有一封信，是写给她的。

[00:35.89]It contained only a slip of paper no bigger than the envelope.

[00:37.67]里面只有一张不比信封大的纸条。

[00:39.44]It read, "Who are you?"

[00:40.92]上面写着：“你是谁？”

[00:42.40]"Who are you?" She had no idea. She was Sophie Amonson of course,

[00:45.45]“你是谁？”她弄不明白。当然了，她是苏菲·爱默生，

[00:48.51]but who was that? She had not really figured that out, yet.

[00:50.77]但是苏菲·爱默生是谁呢？她还没有真正弄清楚。

[00:53.03]What if she had been given a different name? Would she then have been someone else?

[00:55.64]要是她取了另一个名字又会怎样呢？那她会成为另一个人吗？

[00:58.25]Wasn’t it odd that she didn’t know who she was? And wasn’t it unreasonable 3 that she hadn’t been allowed to have any say in what she would look like?

[01:07.37]Her looks had just been dumped on her.

[01:09.62]She could choose her own friends, but she certainly hadn’t chosen herself.

[01:13.82]She had not even chosen to be a human being.

[01:20.04]"I think I’ll go upstairs and do my biology homework," she said, almost apologetically.

[01:25.55]Once she was out in the hall she thought, "No. I’d rather go out in the garden."

[01:28.58]当她走到外面的门厅里，她又想：“不，我宁愿到花园里去。”

[01:31.61]Sophie chased the cat out onto the doorstep and closed the front door behind her.

[01:34.30]苏菲把猫赶到门外的石阶上，顺手关上了前门。

[01:36.99]As she stood outside on the gravel 4 path, the mysterious letter in her hand,

[01:39.23]当她手里拿着那封神秘的信站在屋外的碎石小道上时，

[01:41.46]the strangest feeling came over her. She felt like a doll that had suddenly been brought to life by the wave of a magic wand.

[01:45.31]一种奇特异常的感觉攫住了她，她感觉自己就象是一个突然魔杖点醒了的洋娃娃。

[01:49.17]Perhaps she should go and see if any more letters had arrived.

[01:51.06]也许她该去看看还有没有其它的信寄来。

[01:52.95]Sophie hurried to the gate and looked inside the green mailbox.

[01:54.98]苏菲急忙跑到门口去看那绿色信箱里面。

[01:57.00]She was startled to find that it contained another white envelope exactly like the first.

[01:59.76]她大吃了一惊——里面又有一封信，和第一封一样也是白色信箱。

[02:02.51]But the mailbox had definitely been empty when she took the first envelope.

[02:04.68]但她刚才取第一封信时，信封里明明是空的！

[02:06.85]This evelope had her name on it as well.

[02:08.10]信封上也写着她的名字。

[02:09.36]She tore it open and fished out a note the same size as the first one.

[02:11.59]她拆开信，里面的纸条同第一封一样大小。

[02:13.83]"Where does the world come from?" it said. It was a fair question.

[02:16.61]“世界的本源在哪里？”上面写着。问得好。

[02:19.39]For the first time in her life she felt it wasn’t right to live in the world without at least inquiring where it came from.

[02:22.86]苏菲生平第一次感到自己生活在这个世界，而不至少问问它的起源是不应该的。

[02:26.34]The mysterious letters had made Sophie’s head spin.

[02:28.38]这两封神秘的信把苏菲搅得头晕脑胀。

[02:30.41]Sophie knew that the world was only a small planet in space.

[02:32.41]苏菲知道这个世界只是宇宙中的一颗小行星。

[02:34.41]But where did space come from? It was possible that space had always existed.

[02:37.02]但宇宙又从何而来？也有可能宇宙从来就有，

[02:39.63]In which case she would not need to figure out where it came from.

[02:41.31]这样的话她就不用费尽心机推敲它的起源问题了。

[02:42.98]But could anything have always existed?

[02:44.41]但有什么事物能亘古永存吗？

[02:45.85]Something deep down inside her protested at the idea.

[02:47.55]她内心深处的某种东西在反对这一点。

[02:49.25]Surely everything that exists must have had a beginning.

[02:51.08]现存的每种事物谅必都有个起源。

[02:52.90]So space must have been created out of something else.

[02:54.77]而宇宙也该由另一种东西产生。

[02:56.64]But if space had come from something else, then that something else must also have come from something.

[02:59.63]但假如宇宙起源于另一种东西，那这种东西也应源自某种事物。

[03:02.62]Sophie felt she was only deferring 5 the problem.

[03:04.06]苏菲觉得她只是在将问题越搅越复杂。

[03:05.50]But some point, something must have come from nothing.

[03:07.39]但也许，有些东西是横空出世的。

[03:09.28]She could accept that God had created space. But what about God himself?

[03:11.84]她可以接受上帝创世纪的观点，但上帝自己又是谁造的呢？

[03:14.40]Had He created Himself out of nothing? Again there was something deep down inside her that protested.

[03:17.66]难道他是凭空产生？她内心深处的直觉又一次否定了这个观点。

[03:20.91]Even though God could create all kinds of things, He could hardly create himself before He had a Self to create with.

[03:24.54]尽管上帝能创造世上万物，但他在有一个自己来创造之前简直不能创造自己。

[03:28.17]So there was only one possibility left. God had always existed.

[03:31.04]那么就只有一个可能性了：上帝是从来就有的。

[03:33.92]But she had already rejected that possibility.

[03:35.39]但她已早驳倒了这个可能性了。

[03:36.87]Everything that existed had to have a beginning. Oh drat! She opened the two envelopes again.

[03:40.72]存在的任何事物都应有一个相源呀。噢，真麻烦！苏菲又展开了那两封信。

[03:44.57]"Who are you?"

[03:45.57]“你是谁？”

[03:46.56]"Where does the world come from?"
