What is the importance of the dots, lines, and symbols engraved 2 on some, bones and ivory?
Future historians will be in a unique position when they come to record the history of our own times. They will hardly know which facts to select from the great mass of evidence that steadily 3 accumulates. What is more, they will not have to rely solely 4 on the written word. Films, videos, CDs and CD-ROMS are just some of the bewildering amount of information they will have. They will be able, as it were, to see and hear us in action. But the historian attempting to reconstruct the distant past is always faced with a difficult task. He has to deduce what he can from the few scanty 5 clues available. Even seemingly insignificant 6 remains 7 can shed interesting light on the history of early man.
Up to now, historians have assumed that calendars came into being with the advent 8 of agriculture, for then man was faced with a real need to understand something about the seasons. Recent scientific evidence seems to indicate that this assumption is incorrect.
Historians have long been puzzled by dots, lines and symbols which have been engraved on walls, bones, and the ivory tusks 10 of mammoths. The nomads 13 who made these markings lived by hunting and fishing during the last Ice Age which began about 35,000 B.C. and ended about 10,000 B.C. By correlating markings made in various parts of the world, historians have been able to read this difficult code. They have found that it is connected with the passage of days and the phases of the moon. It is, in fact, a primitive 14 type of calendar. It has long been known that the hunting scenes depicted 16 on walls were not simply a form of artistic 17 expression. They had a definite meaning, for they were as near as early man could get to writing. It is possible that there is a definite relation between these paintings and the markings that sometimes accompany them. It seems that man was making a real effort to understand the seasons 20,000 years earlier than has been supposed.

Further notes on the text
1.He had often dreamed of retiring in England and had planned to settle down in the country.
Frank used to dream of having a car of his own.
They settled down in Australia in 1988.
After two years of travelling, I want to settle down now.
2.Almost immediately he began to complain about the weather, for even though it was still summer, it rained continually and it was often bitterly cold.
I don't have a car, for I can't afford it.
Even though we were very tired, we went on with the work.
3.He acted as if be had never lived in England before.
She acted as if she were mad.
It feels as if/ though it's going to rain.
4.In the end, it was more than he could bear.
This piece of news is more than I can believe.
There were more than ten people in the room.
Grammar in use
When I arrived, Jane had left.
soon as, (not) until, by that time, (never) before, already, for, since, just等,
另外它还常与连词no sooner…than和 hardly…when连用。(cf.词汇学习)过去完成时不能与副词ago 连用(ago只能与一般过去时连用):
He hadn't finished it by yesterday evening.
Word study
1.no sooner…than与 hardly…when
这两组连词意义都与 as soon as相近,但都比 as soon as正式。
He had no sooner returned than he bought a house and went to live there.
No sooner had he returned than he bought a house and went to live there.
No sooner had he begun speaking than he was interrupted.
He had hardly had time to settle down when he sold the house and left the country.
Hardly had he had time to settle down when he sold the house and left the country.
Hardly had he got into the bus when it began moving.
no sooner…than与 hardly…when 都是固定词组, than与when不可混用。
He had planned to settle down in the country.
He sold the house and left the country.
We are going to spend the weekend in the country.
Which country do you come from?
I grew up in the countryside.
这两个副词都与动词 continue(继续,持续)有关。
It rained continually.
This plane can fly continuously for twenty hours.
Why does he come here continually?
