Part 1 Let's Talk on Line!

Dialogue Script 1 1

Anne: Where did you meet Susan?
Joe: I met him through a computer bulletin 2 board.
Anne: Oh, really, what bulletin board?
Joe: It was one I used at the local Internet Café called the E-life.
Anne: I've heard about that, but I've never tried it.
Joe: You ought to. One dollar buys you 15 minutes of computer time. A "chat session 3" links you with other guys on the network.
Anne: I have no desire to talk on a network with a bunch of strangers.
Joe: That's the whole point. All your inhibitions disappear because you can't see the other person. This network allows you to talk to people whom you normally 4 wouldn't talk to.
Anne: I just want a private conversation with one other person.
Joe: You can do that. A private session lets you talk alone. This online-chat program lets you talk about anything with everyone, without prejudice because you can't see them.
Anne: Well, maybe I'll tag 5 along and watch how you talk.

a computer bulletin board (It's a system that enables 6 users 7 to send or read messages that are of general interest and addressed to no particular person.)

Joe说You ought to,这个ought to相当于should,应该... You ought to try it.

I will buy you a concert ticket.

a bunch of strangers a bunch of还有一串的意思,比如 a bunch of grapes 一串葡萄。

6. That's the whole point. What's the point of doing this again and again? 这样反复做有什么意义?I got your point.

7. All your inhibitions disappear because you can't see the other person. Have a private conversation with one other person.

Dialogue Script 2

Joe: That's fine with me. But we'll have to get there early. After 8 p.m., there's always a long waiting line.
Anne: Is it that popular?
Joe: Welcome to the 21st century!
Anne: Okay, okay. We're there tonight. So what does it cost?
Joe: One dollar buys 15 minutes of computer time. This talk isn't cheap.
Anne: I don't know. I'll feel funny talking through a computer.
Joe: Then you've got to figure out a cool name for that.
Anne: Well, how about Cinderella?
Joe: Sounds good. I guarantee you can talk to girls who would never talk to you if they saw your face.
Anne: What's that supposed to mean?
Joe: Well, look in the mirror.

There's always a long waiting line.

2. Anne还不相信,问Is it that popular? The movie is not that bad.

3. Joe说Welcome to the 21st century!

4. 上网聊天还要起一个比较吸引人的名字,you've got to figure out a cool name for that.

I guarantee you can talk to girls who would never talk to you if they saw your face. What's that supposed to mean? Joe把玩笑开到底,look in the mirror.

Dialogue Script 1

Jack 11: Hi, Susan. Are you finished teaching 12 for the day?
Susan: Yes, I'm going home and getting on the Net.
Jack: Really? You use the Internet?
Susan: Yes, I do research for my piano lessons.
Jack: There's information about music on the Internet?
Susan: Yes, but there's not the only reason I use the Net.
Jack: So what's the other reason, to meet a guy?
Susan: No, it's to understand my students. They all use the Internet.
Jack: So why don't you take full advantage of the Internet?
Susan: What do you mean?
Jack: All you think about is your students and music!
Susan: That's my job. I love my job!
Jack: But there's so much more to life than a job, Susan.
Susan: You're talking about men again.
Jack: You guessed it.
Susan: I'm not interested!
Jack: A lot of women like you meet nice men in chat rooms.
Susan: You mean where you can talk with people one-on-one?
Jack: Sure! Lots of people do it.
Susan: Use a computer to find friends? I don't know. It's not for me.

I do research for my piano lessons. do research for something

take full advantage of 充分利用某物,advantage在这里是好处的意思,但是take advantage of someone 却是占某人便宜,侵犯某人权利的意思,例如:He took advantage of that girl.

3. Susan 很爱自己的工作,但是there's so much more to life than a job 除了生活之外还有更多事情,这里Jack指的就是爱情。

4. You guessed it. You got it.

5. A lot of women like you meet nice men in chat rooms.

6. talk with people one-on-one

I don't know. It's not for me. 这里I don't know.相当于I'm not sure. It's not for me

Dialogue Script 2

Anne: Hey, Den 10, what's up?
Den: I've been busy lately.
Anne: Doing what?
Den: I've been spending a lot of time on-line.
Anne: On-line?
Den: On the Internet, talking to people in chat rooms.
Anne: So have you met someone yet?
Den: Lots of people! Yesterday over one hundred people wanted to talk to me!
Anne: About what?
Den: About anything and everything.
Anne: Really?
Den: One even said that I was his dream girlfriend.
Anne: What? Don't you mean dream boyfriend?
Den: Oh, I forgot to tell you I pretended to be a 16-year-old girl.
Anne: Are you nuts?
Den: I had to. Nobody wants to talk to me as a guy.
Anne: I don't know about this, Den.
Den: But now I have a new Internet friend.
Anne: You mean the guy who thinks you're Ms. Right?
Den: Yeah, we're meeting on Friday night.
Anne: You are what? Have you lost it?
Den: I gave up on looking for a girlfriend and now I'm making friends!
Anne: But he thinks you're a girl. He'll want to be more than friends!
Den: I know, so I need your advice.
Anne: If I were you, I'd get a good psychiatrist 13.

2. 注意两个人见面打招呼时Anne说what's up?

I've been busy lately. Anne又问到Doing what? I was busy doing my laundry when he called last night. be busy with something or someone, I'm busy with my papers。 She's busy with the client 14。

4. Den回答I've been spending a lot of time on-line. She has been writing to me since last year.

I had to. Nobody wants to talk to me as a guy.

I don't know about this, Den. I don't know about this.

7. Ms. Right 和Mr.

8. give up on doing something I gave up on looking for a girlfriend and now I'm making friends! make friends with someone这个短语是“和某人交朋友”的意思。

9. 当Anne 知道Den周五要跟一个男网友见面是,更惊讶了,Have you lost it? 跟上面的Are you nuts?一样。

If I were you, I'd get a good psychiatrist. If I were you, I would...
