Part 1 At the Customs and Immigration

Dialogue Script 1

Officer: Good afternoon, sir. May I see your passport, please?
Peter: Of course. Here you are.
Officer: What is the purpose of your visit? Business or pleasure?
Peter: Pleasure.
Officer: I see. How long will you be staying in the U.S.?
Peter: Two weeks. I'll be leaving on June 10th.
Officer: Where do you intend to visit while in the country?
Peter: LA first; then I'll be heading on to New York city.
Officer: Do you have a return ticket to the P.R.C.?
Peter: Yes; however, I'll be returning via Japan——not going back to the P.R.C. directly.

(May I see your passport, please?)。

2.What is the purpose of your visit? Business or pleasure?

3.Where do you intend to visit while in the country?

After visiting Aunt Sarah in Paris, I'm heading on to London. Where are you heading for? I'm heading for San Fransisco.

5.a return ticket返程机票,一般如果出国时间比较短的话,可以买two-way ticket,或者 round-way ticket,也就是往返机票。

6. I'll be returning via Japan

Dialogue Script 2

(on to Customs) (走向海关)

Inspector 1: Do you have anything to declare?
Tom: No, I don't think so.
Inspector: Well, would you mind opening this bag?
Tom: I guess not, although I might not be able to close it again.
Inspector: Aha, what are these magazines?
Tom: Oh, dear, I didn't realize I still had those.
Inspector: Well, sir, since we are very strict about pornography(色情刊物), I will have to confiscate(没收) them. Tom: Certainly.
Inspector: And what's this? Three bottles of whiskey.
Tom: That's the legal limit.
Inspector: Yes, but what about these two six packs of wine spritzers(白葡萄酒苏打水)?
Tom: Oh, those-well, it's just a fun drink-it's not really alcohol.
Inspector: Says here 4%. I'm afraid you'll have to choose.
Tom: OK, take the spritzers.
Inspector: And what's this?
Tom: An aloe(芦荟) plant-good for the health.
Inspector: It's illegal to bring it into the country, sorry. Well, I guess that about takes care of everything.
Tom: You are not kidding! You've taken most of my souvenirs(纪念品) from the States.
Inspector: Well, think of it this way, now you'll be able to shut your bag, no problem.

Do you have anything to declare? 或者Anything to declare? Could you tell me what things have duty on them?

Any arms, munitions, living plants, or animals?
Do you have to pay duty on the liquor and cigarettes?
All this luggage is mine.
I have a suitcase and a traveling bag.
Take a look, please.
I have a few things to declare.
I don't think I have anything to declare.
These items are for personal use.
How long will it take us to get through the customs.
Where should I go through the custom?
I only have shirts and things like that.
The custom formalities are simple.
How much duty should I pay?

Part 2 At A Hotel

Dialogue Script 1

Ms Lincy: Good morning, sir. May I help you?
David: Yes. I have a room booked with you, for three days starting today. Name of Wang. W-A-N-G.
Ms Lincy: Thank you, Mr. Wang. Please wait one moment while I check our reservations list.(pause) That's Mr. David Wang, from Beijing?
David: Yes, it is.
Ms Lincy: Can I see your passport, please?
David: Sure, here you are.(a moment later)
Ms Lincy: Mr. Wang, everything is O.K. Your booking is from today through Friday. Single room. Your room number is 505. Here's your key.
David: Thanks. Could you point me in the right direction?
Ms. Lincy: Certainly, sir. The elevators are right across the lobby. Second floor to fifteenth are the elevators to the right.

Dialogue Script 2

Richard: I'd like to check in, please.
Clerk: Certainly. Do you have a reservation?
Richard: Yes, the name is Lawrence. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence.
Clerk: Here we are. For five nights. Could you fill in the registration 2 card, please?
And I'll need your credit card.
Richard: All right.
Clerk: Thank you. And here's your room key. Room 816.
Richard: Does that room have an ocean view?
Clerk: No. The room with ocean view are $15 more per night. Your room overlooks... the parking lot.
Richard: Well, we'd like a room with an ocean view, please.
Clerk: I'm sorry, those rooms are all taken.

2.Those rooms are all taken.

Dialogue Script 3

David: (To himself) I really overslept. Oh, boy, eleven o'clock. I need something to eat. I'm starving.
Clerk: Front desk. Can I help you?
David: Yeah, hi. This is room 306. Is your dining room still open?
Clerk: I'm sorry, sir. The dining room closed at 10:30.
David: Oh, no. Well, do you know where I can get something to eat?
Clerk: Just call room service at extension 121. You can order a light mean from them. They'll send it up to your room. David: Oh, thanks. I'll give them a call.

Dialogue Script 4

Anne: Are those motel lights up ahead? Yes! And the "Vacancy 3" sign is lit. Thanks heavens.
Clerk: Hi, can I help you?
Anne: Yes, I'd like a room for the night, please. The sign outside says you have vacancies 4.
Clerk: Yes, but only a couple. I guess nobody wants to drive in this storm.
Anne: I sure don't. How much are the rooms?
Clerk: They're $50 a night.
Anne: That's fine.
Clerk: I can give you Room 118. It's right beside the coffee shop. I just need you to sign the register.
Anne: There you go. I'm awfully 5 hungry. Is the coffee shop still open?
Clerk: Yeah, it's open until nine o'clock. If you want anything after that, there are a couple of vending 6 machines for soft drinks, chocolate bars-things like that.
Anne: Thank you. By the way, is there a television in the room?
Clerk: Yes, there is. We've got cable TV.
Anne: Ok, that's great.
Clerk: Well, here's the key. If you need anything else, more towels or anything, the office is open until midnight.
Anne: OK, thanks again.
