 俚语: 被迫认错


现代人似乎什么都吃,猫肉、老鼠肉,“恐怖”的果子狸…… 不过,倒是很少有人愿意吃乌鸦(to eat crow)。据《本草纲目》记载,乌鸦肉酸、涩、平。可见,就口味而言,没人吃乌鸦大概是因为它的肉不鲜美、难以下咽。 与现实意义上的“吃乌鸦”相通,俚语中,“to eat crow”指“忍气吞声、被迫道歉”。比如,地震局发出警报,某市将遭遇7级地震,当地居民必须紧急撤离。可是,等大家一片惶惶然仓忙撤出该市后,地震局才发现预测有误。面对公众,有关负责人只能哑巴吃黄连,被迫公开致歉了。 关于“to eat crow”的渊源,说法不一。普遍的观点认为,该俚语由美国人发明,源于19世纪初的“美英战争”(1812-1815,又称“美国第二次独立战争”)。战争初期,美国溃败,传说当时一名英国军官逼迫一美国士兵吃下了难以下咽的乌鸦。 照这种说法,“败”方受辱、被迫吃乌鸦,确实与不得已认错的滋味“如出一辙”。看个例句:
He must apologize and he saw that clearly enough, must eat crow, as he told himself.(他必须道歉,这他再明白不过了。他告诉自己,这次非得低下头不可。) 此外,“被迫认错”还可表达为,to eat humble 1 pie或者to eat dirt。
