书面表达

  Dear Li Ming,

I have to ask a favor 1 of you. My aunt is coming to see me tomorrow morning and I had planed to meet her at the station because she is not familiar with the streets in Changsha. But it so happens that I have to go to Zhuzhou on business tomorrow and won’t be back till evening. So would you be so kind as to go to meet her at the station instead of me?
My aunt is about 50 years old, nearly 1.60 meters tall, a bit fat and with a round face. She wears short hair. Her name is Zhang Nan and she works 2 in Beijing University. She will arrive in Changsha at 8:40 tomorrow morning by Train 5. To let her know that you meet her instead of me, I have left a photo of me here for you. Thank you..

                           Yours ever,

                            Lin Tao

第二节

(Text 1)

W: Is there anything I can do for you?

M: I’d like to borrow some books to help me improve my English. Would you mind introducing some to me?

W: Certainly. Here are all the new English stories and magazines. They are both interesting and helpful in learning 3 English.

M: Oh, good. How many books can I borrow each time?

  W: No more than two.

M: OK. I’ll just want to borrow one story book and a magazine.

W: All right. And you can keep them for ten days.

  M: Only ten days?

W: Yes, but you can renew 4 them for another week if you can’t finish reading them.

(Text 2)

W: Jack 5, this Friday is your Dad’s 55th birthday, do you remember?

M: Of course I do. How shall we celebrate it?

W: First, we’ll have a birthday present. What about buying a nice tie?

M: That’s a good idea. He likes different colors of ties. And a big birthday cake, too, with 55 candles.

W: Good. Shall we have a special dinner?

M: Sure. How about Chinese food?

W: Fine. Where shall we have it?

M: I think we can have it at home. I’ve got a Chinese cook book and learned 6 to cook a few dishes. I’m sure Dad will like them.

W: That’s good. Would you like me to do shopping with you?

  M: Why not. When?

  W: How about tomorrow afternoon?

M: OK. That would be fine.

(Text 3)

Marco Polo was an Italian man, born in 1254. He was a world traveler. When he was around 16 years old, he traveled with his father and his uncle a long way from Europe to China.
After staying nearly twenty years in the East, they returned home at last. Their friends were surprised to see them again. They had been away for twenty-four years and everybody thought that they must have died a long time ago.
But Marco Polo didn’t stay at home for long. He was taken as a prisoner 7 in a sea battle. Time passed slowly in prison. Marco Polo was not in the least lonely. Every day he told the other prisoners 8 about his travels. The stories he told of the countries of Asia were so interesting that one of the prisoners started to put them down in a book.
In the book Marco Polo told about all the things he had seen and heard. He told of how the Chinese burned a kind of black stone for cooking, and how the heat it gave was much bigger and lasted much longer than a wood fire. People read it, but they said, “This book cannot be true.” When Marco Polo was an old man, he was ill. Some of his friends came to see him in bed. “Now tell us that your book is not true,” they said. “No,” said Marco Polo. “Everything in my book is true. I went to all those countries, and I saw all those strange things. It’s all true.” So his friends believed him. Soon his stories got around and his name is remembered to this day.

(Text 4)

Money, that is bills and coins, may disappear some day. In many countries, people now pay for many things with credit 9 cards. Credit cards are small plastic cards with a number on them. Each person has a different number. When you buy something you can give the clerk the card and he charges the amount on your card. At the end of the month you receive one bill for all the things you have bought using the card.
You can use credit cards in stores, hotels, restaurants. You can pay for airplane tickets, theater tickets, gasoline 10 and flowers with credit cards. Credit cards are even smaller than money, so they are easy to carry. This system also gives you a record of the things you buy and the amount you have paid for them. The biggest problem is that sometimes you spend more than you can pay for at the end of the month.

(Text 5)

Suppose someone on another planet 11 invents radio and builds a very powerful 12 broadcasting station. Suppose he wants to let us know that he exists. He could do this, even though he could not speak any of the earth’s languages. All he needs to do is to send out radio signals 13 that can be counted in some special order.
For example,he might send out beep,beep-beep,beep-beep-beep. This would show that he could count——1,2,3. He could send 2 beeps, then 4,then 6,then 8,and so on. This would show that he can count by twos. Probably he would send much more complicated 14 number-signals which only a scientist could recognize. Anyone who is able to invent radio must know a great deal about numbers and mathematics 15. Some experts feel so sure that they will sooner or later get number-messages,they have set up a project for listening on the giant radio receivers that follow rockets and satellites 16 in space.
