China has scrapped 1 a quota 2 system that was intended to restrict rare earth exports. The move involves 17 metals used in high tech sectors 3, it's aimed at complying with a World Trade Organization ruling released last year.
The Ministry 4 of Commerce issued a notice at the end of December that abolished export quotas 5 for rare earths. That came after the WTO decreed last August that China's administration of rare earths was inconsistent with the trade organization's regulations. It was expected that China would also drop the tariffs 6 on rare earths, but China has not made such changes.
