The Israeli military announced a seven-hour unilateral ceasefire Monday in parts of the Gaza Strip, as Palestinian and Egyptian delegations 1 are meeting in Cairo in hopes of brokering 2 a more durable 3 truce 4.

 

The temporary ceasefire began from 0700 GMT on Monday. The Israel military says it aims to facilitate the entry of humanitarian 5 aid, and to allow displaced Palestinians to return to their homes. The truce, it says, will not apply to areas east of the southern Gaza town of Rafah. Military officials warned that should the truce be violated, the army would fire back.

 

Since Israel started its offensive on the Gaza Strip nearly a month ago, local health officials say the Palestinian death toll 6 has exceeded 1,800, with nearly 10,000 injured. Most of the casualties have been civilians 7. The Israeli side has confirmed the death of 64 Israeli soldiers and three civilians.
