China has criticised Japan’s latest defense 1 white paper, accusing Japan of using the so-called 'China threat' as an excuse for its military build-up.
On Wednesday, Foreign Ministry 2 spokeswoman Hua Chunying said the white paper ignored facts and made groundless charges on China’s military development and maritime 3 activities. She accused Japan of deliberately 4 playing up China as a threat to stir up tensions to advance its military ambitions. Hua said China was resolute 5 in safeguarding its territorial 6 sovereignty and maritime rights, adding it is committed to resolving disputes through dialogue.
The Japanese cabinet approved a defense white paper for 2014 on Tuesday. It stated the need for Japan to improve its defense capacity to cope with what is called an increasingly 'severe security environment,' identifying the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, China and Russia as potential threats.
