小词大义：ball 的其他用法
Ball这个词人人都认识，就是球的意思。但在日常表达里，它的用法却不止于此。
1. The ladies were all dressed beautifully at the ball.
舞会上女士们全都穿得很漂亮。
在上面这个句子里，ball的意思是“舞会”。
另外，常见的短语on the ball 通常表示“有知识，有才华，懂行，办事利索”等意思。例如：
2. He is a teacher who is really on the ball.
他是个了不起的老师。
那么，由此类推，have nothing on the ball就肯定是“没有才华，办事不利”的意思了。

有时候，我们还会用ball这个词来指代某件事情或者某个任务，比如：
3. I am glad you have started the ball rolling.
很高兴你把这事推动起来了。
4. The ball is in your court now.

最后再补充一点，我们知道fireball是“火球”的意思，在日常表达中其实也常常引申为“成功、热情、精力旺盛”之意。
