7月29日，法属留尼汪群岛上出现了一块神秘的飞机残骸，国际调查团队正在检测这块残骸是否属于失踪的马航MH37。

“飞机残骸”可以用plane debris/wreckage表示， debris 指碎片、残骸，如碎片云（debris cloud）。Wreckage也表示残骸，不过wreckage指被毁坏物体遗留下来的残骸；debris则是毁坏过程中四散开来或者飞出去的的残骸碎片，此外debris还有垃圾的意思，如海洋废弃物（marine debris）、太空垃圾（space debris）。
波音公司相关人员通过照片和残骸比对进行初步评估（conduct an initial assessment），新发现的残骸与波音777客机襟副翼（flaperon）部分有一定相似度，但没有透露更多细节。
专家透露在残骸上发现了编号（the serial 3 numbers）BB670，这个虽然既不是飞机的编号 （plane's registration 4 number），也不是零件编码，但在对其归属问题的分析上将起到关键作用。法国航空部门正在调查残骸跟去年3月份消失无踪的MH370航班的关系，预计数日内将有结果。
马航方面也发表声明，称正与有关方面合作检测残骸，现在判定残骸来源为时过早（it is "too premature 5" for the airline to speculate its origin）。
