  19世纪70年代,Shindig在美国开始流传,表示“狂欢会,热闹嘈杂的舞会”。今天这个词已经很少听说了,但在表示讽刺和反语时还会用到。


  根据《牛津英语词典》的解释,shin-dig的更早用法可以追溯到19世纪40年代,仅表示“敲打胫骨”。可能在疯狂喧闹的狂欢舞会中,容易发生身体碰撞,甚至导致胫骨淤青或擦伤,因此后来的人们就诙谐地用shindig来表示这种狂欢聚会了。


  此外,另一种解释把shindig和shindy联系起来,因为shindy也有“奢华舞会,盛大的社交集会”的意思。Shindy出现在19世纪20年代,被认为和shinny(简易曲棍球戏/球棒)有渊源,shinny是用弯曲的棍子和一个球、罐头或类似的器具进行的一种不正规的曲棍球游戏,在学校里比较流行。


  至于shinny的来源没人能说清楚,但可能和游戏中的大声叫喊“Shin ye!”有关,指踢打对方队员的小腿胫骨。所以,说来说去,还是跟shin(胫骨)脱不了干系
