According to a new opinion poll in Greece, 79 percent of Greeks want to remain in the eurozone. The poll also says 59 percent are satisfied with the way the government is negotiating with its lenders, but nearly half of them want a deal to be struck quickly. The news comes as Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras rejected what he called an "absurd" agreement, which included tax hikes, privatisations and pension reform.
"Yes, we need to stay in the euro because I believe that if we go back to the drachma we will sink and everything will have been in vain. This is what we have been fighting for all this time, to stay in the euro, so if we go to the drachma now, it's all over for us," said Gogo Paksimadaki, Athens resident.
"I believe that all Greeks need to fight together, to stay in the euro and get the country back on its feet and not be in this mess that we are in. And they (the politicians) should stop fighting amongst themselves in parliament, and instead join forces and fight for our country," Athens resident Nikos Konalas said.
Athens and its creditors 1 have been in talks for months over a deal to unlock further loans. The latest proposal by its lenders has sparked a fierce backlash within Tsipras's Syriza party, which says the deal goes against a pledge to end austerity. But the poll by Metron Analysis for the Parapolitika newspaper says that 47 percent of those participating wanted the governemnt to accept the lenders' proposal while 35 percent oppose it. Some nine percent believe that the government should accept the deal only if the terms are favorable.
