Outside the G7 Summit, thousands of protesters have been trying to disrupt the meeting. Convening 1 on upscale resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen from different directions, they have been trying to get as close as possible to the hotel at which world leaders are meeting.
Protesters are condemning 2 the group's empty promises on climate change and poverty relief. Many are critical of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership—a potential US-EU trade deal that they claim will harm consumer protection, social rights and the environment.
Clashes with police have occurred, and a number of protesters were arrested. It has been reported that around 17,000 German policemen were deployed 3 around the hotel. About 2,000 Austrian police were standing 4 by on the Germany-Austria border to ensure the summit's security.
