  尽管今天我们用loom来表示“织布机”,但hairloom和这个关系并不大。Heirloom是一个复合词,由heir和loom两部分组成。


  Heirloom里的heir表示“继承人,后嗣”,这是我们耳熟能详的。后来heir的意义有所扩大,表示“(职位)接任者,后继者,后续的事物”,例如:Thomas Kinkade is heir to the schlock art market once dominated by Walter Keane's wide-eyed children.


  Heirloom里的loom来自中世纪古英语lome,最初表示“任何一种工具”,直到15世纪初才专指“纺织工具,织布机”。


  Heirloom最早也出现在15世纪初期,表示祖先遗留下来的任何一种工具或物品。到了17世纪,它才有了今天的含义,表示“祖传遗物,传家宝”。
