The United Nation's newly-appointed envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, has arrived in Sanaa. The visit comes shortly after a humanitarian ceasefire took effect in the crisis-hit country.
"We have come to prepare for the humanitarian ceasefire that was announced. There is a team of humanitarian aid agencies from UNICEF, the World Health Organization and other organisations. If you will allow me to speak about the humanitarian situation: We welcome the truce and we want it to happen," Ahmed said.
The UN envoy said his current mission in Yemen is to ensure the smooth delivery of aid into the country. He warned that the ceasefire should be unconditional and benefit all parties. He added that Yemen's only path to peace lies through dialogue.
The ceasefire in Yemen began late on Tuesday, but clashes have been reported in some areas. It is intended to allow the shipment of much needed food and medicine into the country.
