Chinese leaders have called for all-out efforts to save those on board the Eastern Star passenger ship, which sank late Monday night on a section of the Yangtze River in central China's Hubei province.
President Xi Jinping said no efforts should be spared to rescue the passengers, and he has ordered stricter security measures to make sure such accidents do not happen in future.
Premier 1 Li Keqiang arrived at the scene Tuesday to lead the rescue operation. Li told rescuers to save the lives of the passengers at all costs and urged local authorities to mobilize all forces for that purpose.
Li also ordered hospitals to prepare to treat anyone who is rescued. He called for regular and transparent 2 updates on the rescue operation.
