China's Foreign Ministry 1 says it's verifying media reports of a violent incident in the border area with Vietnam. On its official microblog, the ministry says it's moving as quickly as possible.
A website statement by the local Vietnamese government says a Chinese man who was being repatriated 2 from Vietnam, along with 15 other migrants, seized a gun from a border guard and began firing. It says five Chinese people and two Vietnamese guards were killed in the ensuing gunfight and standoff. The statement also says local Vietnamese and Chinese authorities urged the group to surrender, but it refused. It doesn't say whether the Chinese fatalities 3 included women or children.
