 "That's right," replied Sam.

“太对了，”萨姆回答，
"But some animals do like to acquire things, even though they don't pay anything for them."
“不过有些动物也喜欢收集东西，即使他们从不必为此付钱。”
"Such as?" asked the Head Man.
“比如说？”这个负责人问。
"A rat," said Sam.
“老鼠，”萨姆说，
"A rat will fix up a home for himself, but then he'll bring home all sorts of little objects--trinkets and stuff.
“老鼠先为自己安一个家，然后他就开始往家搬各种小东西--乱七八糟的东西。
Anything he can find that catches his eye."
他看到的任何东西都会引起他的兴趣。”
"You're right," said the Head Man. "You're absolutely right, Sam.
“你说得对，”这个负责人说，“完全对，萨姆。
You seem to know quite a lot about animals."
你似乎对动物非常的了解。”
"I like animals," said Sam. "I love to watch them."
“我喜欢动物，”萨姆说，“我爱观察他们。”
"Then come with me and we'll explore the Zoo," said the Head Man, getting up from his chair.
“那么就来和我一起参观一下这个动物园吧，”这个负责人说着，从他的椅子上站起来。
"I don't feel like working anymore today. I'll show you the Zoo."
“今天我不想再工作了。我要带你去看看这个动物园。”
And away they went, the two of them.
他们走开了，就他们两个。
That night Sam slept in the Head Man's office, by special permission.
萨姆那天晚上得到了特别的优待，被允许睡到那个负责人的办公室里。
He unrolled his sleeping bag on the floor and crawled in.
他在地板上打开他的睡袋，爬了进去。
The plane taking him back home would leave in the morning.
带他回家的飞机将在明早离开。
Sam's head was full of everything he had seen in the Zoo.
萨姆满脑子都是他在动物园里见到的一切。
And before he turned out the light he took his notebook out of his rucksack and wrote a poem.
他在熄灯前从他的背包里拿出他的日记本，写了一首诗。

萨姆·比弗的诗
Of all the places on land and sea, Philadelphia's zoo is the place for me.
在陆地和海洋中的所有地方，费城动物园我最欣赏。
There's plenty to eat and a lot to do,
那里有许多吃的和可做的事情，
There's a Frigate 2 Bird and a tiny Shrew;
那里有一只军舰鸟和一只小鼩鼱；
There's a Vesper Rat and a Two-toed Sloth 3,
那里有一只白足鼠和一只两趾树懒，
And it's fair to say that I like them both.
老实说来这两者我都喜欢。
There's a Canada Goose and a Polar Bear And things that come from Everywhere.
那里有一只加拿大鹅和一头北极熊，还有从各处来的动物在这里蜂拥。
There are lots of things that you've never seen Like the Kinkajou and the Wolverine.
那里的许多动物你以前都从未看见，比如蜜熊还有狼獾。
You really have to go to the zoo To see a newborn Wallaroo Or a Fallow Deer or a White-tailed Gnu.
你真该到动物园里看动物，来看一只新生的毛袋鼠，来看一头白尾角马或是扁脚鹿。
There are wondrous 4 birds on a beautiful lake, There's a Timber Wolf and a Hognose Snake.
这里有奇特的鸟儿在美丽的湖上唱歌，这里有一头大灰狼和一条猪鼻蛇。
There are animals with great appeal, Like the Hummingbird 5 and the Harbor Seal.
这里有很多动物你看了都难忘掉，比如蜂鸟和斑海豹。
There are pony 6 rides, there are birds of prey 7, And something happening every day.
这里有任你骑坐的小马，还有食肉的禽鸟，每一天的新变化都不少。
There are Wolves and Foxes, Hawks 8 and Owls 9, And a great big pit where the Lion prowls.
这里有狼和狐狸，鹰和猫头鹰，还有一头狮子在深坑里走个不停。
There are quiet pools and pleasant cages, Where Reptiles 10 lie and the Tiger rages.
这里有静静的水池和漂亮的兽栏，爬虫在里面躺卧，老虎在里面怒喊。
The houses are clean, the keepers are kind, And one Baboon 11 has a pink behind.
房舍整洁，管理员善待动物，一只狒狒有一个粉红色的屁股。
The entire aim of a well-kept zoo Is to bring the animal world to You.
一个办得好的动物园，唯一的目的是把动物世界在你面前呈现。
