During the two-day college entrance exams, known as 'gaokao', meticulous monitoring measures have been implemented in every exam hall, particularly in Guangdong. The province has put in place its strictest guidelines yet to deter cheating.
At the command center for the 2015 college entrance examination in Guangdong, the screens on the wall show the real-time situation of the 58 test sites in the city of Guangzhou. They are part of the digital exam inspection system which is supposed to shield mobile phones signals, intercoms and wireless devices at all the test sites.
Guangdong education officials want to make sure no one breaks the exam rules, and as a result, fairness can be ensured.
"In some parts of the province, we’ve installed anti-cheating and identification systems. That’s the biggest difference between this year’s exams and the previous years’. We also use video surveillance to monitor all the test sites in Guangdong," said Chen Xuejie, head of Guangdong Higher Education Admission Office.
In the province’s 25,000 exam rooms, more than 745,000 students are sitting through two-days of testing. This year, the number of registered candidates is about 2,000 less than last year. But given that the admission rate for top universities was a mere 8 percent last year, the competition to enter a better institution is just as fierce. The comprehensive inspection system, though, reassures students that all are competing on an equal playing field.
"In the exam room, all the facilities are well-prepared and examiners are very thoughtful. I feel very confident about the exams because I’m taking them at my own school, which is super serious about setting up standardized exam rooms," said a student.
Nationwide, the common practice is to keep the exam surveillance videos for at least half a year. In this way, any misconduct can be investigated should complaints be filed.
