首先，let's warm up，我们还是先来热热身。在第17课中我们讲到了一个短语—— ace 1 in the hole. It means a secret advantage, for ready to use if you need to. 可以翻译为：杀手锏，必杀技，锦囊妙计，秘密王牌，最后王牌，看家本领，绝招，秘密武器，强大的备用手段（或方法）等等意思。
今天说一下这个短语的用法。因为ace in the hole是个idiom，即：习惯用语。有的习惯用语在一些名词前是不能加上任何修饰词的。但是这个短语名词ace前面可以加不定冠词an和物主代词one's，也可以加定冠词the。下面我们来看三个例句。
例句1：High technology remains 2 the ace in the hole for foreign companies.高科技仍然是外国公司的王牌。
例句2：That 100 dollars is my ace in the hole.那100美元是我应急备用的钱。

不同在那里呢？玩牌的人如果把一张好牌塞在袖管里，他的目的是拿这张牌来换牌从而取胜，但是他的手段既不合游戏规则又不光明正大。这就是an ace up one's sleeve和ace in the hole不同的地方。ace in the hole 虽然是暗牌，但是合乎游戏规则，而an ace up one's sleeve却是暗中藏牌欺骗作弊了，可以翻译为：取胜的手段，花招，耍老千。接下来我们要听个例子。这是律师在跟当事人谈即将开庭的案子。
