March 30th, 1981 - Outside a Washington Hotel, John Hinckley Junior shoots President Ronald Reagan and three others. 1867 - Secretary of State William Seward reaches a deal with Russia to buy the territory of Alaska. At the time critics ridicule 5 the 7.2-million-dollar purchase as “Seward’s Folly”.
1986 - “You are a grand old flag, you’re a high-flying flag. And forever, in peace, may you wave!” Actor James Cagney, known for his movie tough guy roles, dies at his farm in upstate New York at age 86. Cagney won an Oscar for playing Broadway legend Georgia M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy.
