March 28th, 1979 - America's worst commercial nuclear accident takes place at the Three Mile Island plant near Middletown, Pennsylvania. Though the health effects are considered small, the accident strengthens opposition 1 to the nation's nuclear power industry.

1987 -“The hills are alive with the sound of music ...” Maria von Trapp, whose life inspired the musical and movie “The Sound of Music”, dies in Vermont at age 82.
And 1955 -“She said here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down ...” Country singer Reba McEntire is born in McAlester, Oklahoma.
