这个字出自宗教术语。天主教和基督教都强调“信耶酥得永生”。人要领受耶酥替人赎罪而死的恩典(grace)，才能洗清原罪，进入天国。那么，没有机会信耶酥的人怎么办？在公元前生活的人，包括苏格拉第，荷马这些人，都没有机会信耶酥，是否都该下地狱呢，为了处理这个问题，天主教创造了limbo 1这个词，代表这种人这种人的灵魂暂时的归宿，在那里等待救世主降临拯救他们。
在但丁的《神曲》（The Divine Comedy）中，把limbo摆在地狱的最外围，荷马，苏格拉第等古圣先贤都在里面。他们同样永远没有升入天堂的希望。比那些因为犯了错而在炼狱（Purgatory）中受折磨的灵魂还惨，因为那些灵魂最终还是可以升天的。
在一般的用法中，limbo代表的是一个三不管地带，或是一种妾身未明的状态。比如说经由互联网传播的色情就没有任何一个单位管得着，所以这就是一个legal limbo，法律上的三不管地带。
