Syrian president Bashar Assad is expected to easily win an election that's widely being denounced as a sham 1. Thousands of Syrians are lining 2 up in areas controlled by the Syrian government to vote in Syria's first multi-candidate election in more than 40 years. The vote is being held amid the civil war that's left more than 160,000 people dead.
"Of course the importance of the elections is to restore security and stability for the country and to fight the mercenaries that came. And that is why there should be elections."
Nations, including the U.S., Britain, France, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are calling the vote a farce 3. Internal Syrian opposition 4 groups are boycotting 5. Voting is not being held in rebel-controlled areas, which includes much of northern and eastern Syria. More than 2.7 million refugees who have fled Syria are either excluded or are refusing to vote.
