At their summit in Gothenberg, Sweden, Thursday, the United States and the European Union expressed 1)grave concern over the violence in the Middle East, and 2)urged Israelis and Palestinians to end the bloodshed and seek a 3)negotiated solution.
Mr. Bush spoke 1 for all summit leaders at a joint 2 4)news conference with EU officials. "We agree on the need for all parties to halt the violence in the Middle East," he said.
A U.S. mediated 3 5)ceasefire faltered 4 in its initial hours, when an Israeli security officer and a Palestinian man died in a shootout in the West Bank.
A joint U.S.-EU statement called on the parties to 6)implement 7)recommendations of an international commission led by former U.S. Senator George Mitchell. The recommendations seek to pave the way for a resumption of negotiations 5.
But Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson, who holds the 8)rotating EU presidency 6, said the bloodshed must end first. "Without an ending to the violence, there will be no possibilities to go on with the so-called Mitchell report, that after the end of violence, we call for confidence-building measures, and then negotiations about peace and 9)reconciliation."
European Commission President Romano Prodi said summit leaders also discussed furthering economic 10)collaboration in the region. "We have also started the idea of building up some foundation for economic cooperation in the Middle East, because if we do not work also in the economic fields, we shall never have a stable peace," he said.
President Bush and EU leaders agreed to work together to help bring 11)stability and peace to the region.
