US Military Still on High Alert in Persian Gulf 1

U.S. military forces in the Persian Gulf region remain on high (1)alert following intelligence warnings late last week of a possible terrorist attack. The Pentagon is still remaining tight-lipped about details of the terrorist threat and its (2)precautionary response.
But spokesman, Rear Admiral Craig Quigley, went on the record Tuesday to confirm the threat was considered serious and (3)credible 2 - serious and credible enough to order U.S. Navy ships docked in Bahrain to sea, the (4)cancellation of a Marine 3 exercise in Jordan and other so-called force protection measures.
Admiral Quigley said, "In this particular case, we feel that the confluence 4 of the intelligence information is specific enough and credible enough so that we had to take this (5)prudent, cautious course of action because you're talking about people's lives."
Admiral Quigley rejects suggestions that the response has given terrorists a victory, forcing U.S. military units to effectively (6)flee in the face of a threat. He says it was the right thing to do. "If we can put ships to sea," he said, "if we can (7)remove (8)Marines from an exercise, if we can increase force protection measures throughout that region to make it harder - it's never impossible - but make it harder to attack U.S. forces then given the circumstances we see in this case we felt that was the right thing to do."
News reports have linked the latest threat to associates of (9)fugitive Saudi terrorist leader Osama bin 5 Laden 6. He has also been linked to last October's bombing of a U.S. destroyer while on a port call in Yemen. Seventeen U.S. sailors were killed in that attack, which prompted a review of security measures for all American forces worldwide.
