President Bush has congratulated Indonesia on a peaceful transfer of power after months of protest against ousted 1 leader Abdurrahman Wahid. Mr. Bush telephoned Indonesia's new president Thursday and 1)vowed to work with her on 2)solving the country's problems.
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Mr. Bush spoke 2 to Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri for about 10 minutes Thursday. The conversation focused on how the United States can help Indonesia move forward on economic and political development. "The president called and congratulated her and Indonesia on the peaceful transfer of power," said Mr. Fleischer. "He emphasized the importance of Indonesia's unity 3, 3)prosperity, and continued democratic development. He reaffirmed the United States 4)commitment to working with Indonesia to address its many challenges."
Ms. Megawati is the daughter of Indonesia's founding president and previously 4 served as Mr. Wahid's vice 5 president. She was chosen by the legislature to replace Mr. Wahid after he was 5)impeached on charges of 6)corruption 6 and 7)incompetence.
After fighting those charges for months, Mr. Wahid agreed to give-up power after security forces refused to throw out the legislature. He is now scheduled to undergo treatment for 8)fluctuating blood pressure at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in the United States.
President Megawati takes charge at a time of economic crisis and 9)regional violence in Indonesia. There has been a series of bombings in the capital. Two men on motorbikes shot and killed a judge Thursday who last year sentenced the son of former leader Suharto to 18 months in jail for corruption.
