Explosions at two churches in the Indonesian capital Jakarta Sunday morning injured at least 14 people. It is not yet known who is responsible for the blasts, or whether they are linked to political 1)upheaval 1 in the country. The explosions come one day after Indonesia's 2)parliament voted to begin formal 3)impeachment 2 proceedings 3 against President Abdurrahman Wahid.
A subdued 4 crowd milled around the gate of the Santa Anna Catholic church in eastern Jakarta. People were looking at a white board set up in the church 4)parking lot, on which police and church officials had written the names of those injured in the 5)explosion. It occurred during Sunday morning mass.
A second explosion rocked a nearby Protestant church some 30 minutes later. Mass there had already ended.
At the Santa Ana Church, a man explained how he thinks the blast occurred. "The bomb had to be set from behind - inside the church," he says. "If they [the perpetrators] tried to go in the front, we'd have seen them leave again."
Others recalled a series of bomb blasts that 6)ripped through roughly a dozen churches across Indonesia last Christmas Eve - claiming 17 lives. Police made some arrests at that time, but no clear motive 5 for those blasts has ever been established.
"We heard, you know, in Christmas there is bomb, and I think, it 's common news for us. And, until now, I really did not suppose that it would get impact to us like this," says another eye 7)witness.
It is unclear if the latest blasts are linked to the political upheaval in the country.
The explosions come the day after Parliament decided 6 to 8)initiate impeachment proceedings against President Wahid, and ordered him to appear Monday before lawmakers to give an accounting 7 of his presidency 8. Mr. Wahid says the special assembly session is illegal and that he will not appear before the 9)legislature.
