Megawati Begins Presidency

It is the first day in office for Indonesia's new President Megawati Sukarnoputri. The daughter of Indonesia's founder 1 Sukarno must now consider whom she would like to be her vice 2 president. Ms. Megawati also has to determine how to handle 1)deposed 3 president, Abdurrahman Wahid, who so far has refused to leave the presidential palace.
A crowd of 2)journalists gathered in the marbled 3)hallways of Indonesia's vice presidential office Tuesday, hoping for a glimpse of the country's new leader, the 4)notoriously media-shy Megawati Sukarnoputri.
On one wall is a 5)portrait of Ms. Megawati. It hangs alongside an empty space, where staff have already removed the portrait of deposed President Abdurrahman Wahid.
Indonesia's National Assembly voted to 6)elevate Ms. Megawati from vice president to president on Monday, ousting 4 Mr. Wahid. But Mr. Wahid has so far refused to leave the presidential palace, and Ms. Megawati is working from her old office.
It is not yet clear how President Megawati, the daughter of Indonesia's founder, Sukarno, will approach the task of removing Mr. Wahid from the house where she lived as a child. A spokesman for Mr. Wahid says the leader who ruled Indonesia for 21 months still considers himself to be president. Spokesman Adhie Massardi says Mr. Wahid still considers himself to be Indonesia's legal and 7)moral leader.
National Assembly speaker Amien Rais says Mr. Wahid should be persuaded - not forced - to leave the palace. He says, "the new president has to have 8)access to the palace. It is a symbol of the state, not a house belonging to a minister."
The National Assembly is expected to confirm a new vice President on Wednesday to serve out the remainder of Ms. Megawati's original term.
Party leaders say there are at least six 9)candidates to become the new vice-president under Ms. Megawati. Some possible 10)contenders are Parliament Speaker Akbar Tanjung and former security minister, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
After meeting privately 5 with Ms. Megawati, Mr. Yudhoyono would not say whether he had 11)ambitions to be vice president. But he does have hopes for the government of Ms. Megawati.
He says there is hope the new government will be more effective with Ms. Megawati as its head. He also says as president, Ms. Megawati should focus on an 12)agenda for the recovery of the economy, the 13)normalization of political life, and the promotion 6 of law and peace.
Despite fears of possible violence with the removal of Mr. Wahid, the streets in Jakarta and elsewhere, remained quiet Tuesday and the business of the new government is 14)underway.
